It is quiet in the night. Two little brothers are lying in bed, but they can’t sleep. They’re bored. They would much rather keep playing for a little while. In the anochi it is dark, everyone is asleep, except…

Anochi is an acrobatic and energetic dance performance. We follow two mischievous brothers who definitely aren’t going to sleep! Playing on the iPad is much more fun. Although playing together is a bit tricky when there’s only one screen. But when the tablet suddenly stops working, they have to invent their own game. They find themselves in a magical world of fantasy and dance. As the night grows deeper, the brothers create chaos. They dance. They stay up. They argue. They work together. They have an enormous amount of fun. They pull off the craziest tricks. And when they finally fall asleep… the anochi is already over.

Remses Rafaela blends acrobatics, hip-hop and Afro-Caribbean dance with slapstick and shadow play into an imaginative, energetic dance performance for the whole family. An energetic cast and a mysterious bear convey a powerful message about playing together and letting go of screens.

Anochi means “night” in Papiamentu, the language spoken on Aruba, Bonaire and Curaçao.

Duration: 50 minutes.

I ora ku finalmente nan ta pega soño… e anochi a kaba kaba.

Remses Rafaela ta meskla akrobasia, hiphop i baile Afro-Karibe ku komedia i teatro di sombra pa krea un obra yen di fantasia i energia pa henter famia.

Over de maker

You have probably seen Remses Rafaela perform in numerous youth and young adult productions in recent years. He has also created various choreographies and worked as a choreographer, theatre maker and artistic connector. After a successful collaboration with Maas Theater & Dans, it is time for him to establish himself as a new dance company for children and young people. In Remses’ unique dance idiom — a blend of acrobatics, hip-hop and Afro-Caribbean dance mixed with slapstick and shadow play — he creates imaginative, energetic dance performances. He is driven to bring the Caribbean narrative to Dutch theatres and to create stories that keep all children on the edge of their seats. And when children can’t stay on the edge of their seats after the show, but leave the theatre dancing and jumping, his mission is accomplished.

DG Rafaela embraces the power of art to foster recognition, understanding and acceptance. They aim to offer a perspective in their performances that inspires and connects both young and old. They encourage young audiences to share their own stories, discover their creative voices and embrace their unique talents. That is why they stimulate children to take an active role in the creative process of their productions. In addition to performances, they offer workshops, interactive sessions and participatory activities. Remses has already contributed to projects such as De Super Straat in collaboration with the Wereldmuseum in Rotterdam, mural art in the Chopinlaan neighbourhood in Delft, Afri Sound in the Afrikaanderwijk, and award-winning projects with SKVR, Walibi Nederland and the Nationale Theater.
