IN SHORT: In this double bill, experience the intense, expressive, and poetic style of Liam McCall in one evening. In Refraction [breaking light], Bboys Liam McCall and Oscar Starink explore the identity of Breakers through light and refraction. FR/AGILE is a deeply personal solo in which McCall merges fragility with agility - a powerful performance that earned him the Best of Fringe Amsterdam Award in 2022.

Over the course of one evening, you’ll witness two works that showcase McCall’s artistic growth and signature style. His avant-garde approach is expressive, intense, poetic, and visually striking, while always staying true to his integrity. What you see is what you get.

In Refraction [breaking light], McCall and Starink, both members of the Underdogz crew, delve into what it truly means to be a Breaker, using light and refraction as tools for discovery. FR/AGILE reveals McCall’s search to reconcile his vulnerability with his flexibility, resulting in an honest, resonant solo that continues to leave an impact.

FR/AGILE

In 2022, FR/AGILE won the Best of Fringe Amsterdam Award. In this sincere dance solo, McCall seeks to reconcile his agility with his vulnerability, making a case for softness —especially within the tough world of hip hop. Because only by doing so can we hold on to the light in a world that seems to be growing ever darker. FR/AGILE is a battle through the darkness, in search of a piece of light.

Refraction [breaking light]

Refraction [breaking light] is a duet by Liam McCall and Oscar Starink. Together, they explore what it means to be a Breaker, using light as a tool to express their ideas. Have you ever noticed how objects seem to shift position when viewed through a glass of water? That phenomenon is called refraction: a light wave bends at a surface, changes speed, and creates a distorted image of what lies beneath. So what hides beneath the surface of a Bboy?

Over de maker

Liam McCall (1995) is a B-Boy, dancer, performer, and maker based in Utrecht. His style is a genre-defying blend of breaking, contemporary, hip hop, mime, and experimental dance. Known for his creative freedom, musicality, stage presence, improvisation skills, and movement quality, Liam remains a force in breaking, all-style, and experimental battles, with numerous victories to his and his crew’s name.

In 2014, he began freelancing as a self-taught artist in the dance and theatre world, quickly building an impressive résumé. In 2023, he was nominated for the prestigious VSCD Swan for Most Impressive Performance for his role in Dorian by ISH and Dutch National Ballet.

Liam has always been a creator—on his own, with Underdogz, or alongside his sister Feadan as the performing duo ‘MC²’. In 2022, he shifted his focus more toward choreography and creation. His debut solo work FR/AGILE won the ‘Best of Fringe Award’ at the Amsterdam Fringe Festival. His second work, Refraction, was curated for the Dutch Dance Days, and both pieces have already been featured at Theaterfestival De Parade.
