IN SHORT
An absurd, physical trip about our hunger for always wanting more. Acrobatics, illusions and edible props melt together into a visual spectacle full of humour and chaos. A circus performance you’ll want to sink your teeth into.
Austrian maker Michael Zandl, known for the acclaimed Sawdust Symphony, returns to Circusstad Festival with FOOD: a surprising and humorous performance about our endless hunger for more. Four young circus artists Fidel Rott, Hedvig Brodén, Jakob Vöckler and Karin Brodén, all graduates of Codarts Circus Arts in Rotterdam, lead you into an absurd world overflowing with food.
In a playful mix of acrobatics, object manipulation, illusions and everything edible, FOOD comically and confrontingly exposes our compulsive urge to consume. A simple daily act such as eating spirals out of control on stage, becoming an obsessive ritual of stacking, stuffing, and swallowing until 'enough' no longer exists. The performance reflects the commercial temptations we all face, holding up a witty and troubling mirror to our society.
With FOOD, Michael Zandl once again delivers a unique performance not to be missed. Surrealism at its finest, in a disturbingly delicious circus experience that lingers long after the final bite.
Already the most enjoyable performance I’ve seen this season.

About the maker
Michael Zandl (1989) is an Austrian circus artist and has been a house maker at Korzo since 2020. Michael is interested in pushing beyond what we traditionally expect from circus. He enjoys working with “real” objects that are not typically associated with circus performances. In his work, technical refinement and special effects come together, placing circus technique in a new context a challenge he embraces. Using objects as a starting point, he explores new movement vocabularies and manipulates these objects to tell compelling stories.
By combining storytelling through illusions with live, one-time-only experiences, he aims to transport the audience into another world. Michael enjoys working with the absurd, blending abstraction with subtle humour. He sees these elements as a powerful source of expression.
