There’s a square. Is it a house?
There’s a sound coming from it. What’s happening inside?
A little hatch opens. Is there something inside?
What’s in there? Who’s in there?
Kluizelaar is a funny and touching performance about a tiny little house. Its inhabitant isn’t home, but we can hear them… A performance about being alone and coming home.
Kluizelaar is a non-verbal performance combining physical theatre and music, created for young children aged 2 to 7 and anyone who would like to feel that small again. Through humour, movement and subtle sounds, it opens up a world where curiosity takes centre stage. Children are actively drawn into the play, making every performance a shared journey of discovery.
Kluizelaar has previously toured internationally to great acclaim, visiting Egypt, China and Italy, and appearing at renowned festivals such as Baboró (Galway), Young at Art (Belfast) and Imaginate (Edinburgh). In September 2026, the performance will travel to Australia for the first time, where it will be presented at the Awesome Festival in Perth, marking a new milestone for the production.
“A delightful little theatrical gem to lose yourself in.”
“An almost perfect blend of movement and the human voice in theatre for young audiences… A performance that draws children into a lively, hilarious interaction with the hermit on stage.”
– Joyce McMillan (The Scotsman, UK)

About the maker
Simone de Jong Company creates original, funny and sensitive work rooted in movement, music and imagination. The performances are largely non-verbal, because young children discover the world through many languages, not just words.
“Our performances bring people together and challenge them,” says Simone de Jong (Artistic Director). “Imagination is a safe place where being ‘weird’ can be wonderful. We start with the physical and end with the philosophical.”
Simone de Jong trained in contemporary mime as a creator and performer, as well as in music theatre. She teaches both professionals and children, has created numerous performances and written two children’s books.
