IN SHORT: JOHNNY is a physical and absurd performance in which five stuntmen balance between bravado and vulnerability. In their attempt to finally be in the spotlight, they perform death-defying tricks full of humor and self-mockery. But beneath the spectacular façade lie questions about masculinity, self-worth, and failed relationships.
JOHNNY has surtitles and is accessible for deaf and hard-of-hearing audiences.
Breakdance collective 155 (Gouden Krekel Award winner CONTROL and resident makers at Maas) is back with JOHNNY — a show that makes many a cynical millennial heart beat faster. In JOHNNY, five stuntmen, with balls of steel (and maybe a bit of brain damage), wait for their big break in an action movie. But in between the backflips, wipeouts, and bursts of laughter, the question arises: How many hits do you have to take to prove you’re not a wimp? How do you stay true to yourself when you’re always standing in someone else’s shadow? And more importantly: what good is a perfectly executed stunt if your ex just dumped you?
In a world of filters and façades, 155 brings a show that is real. For everyone who grew up with MTV but now debates gentrification. For those who love flipping the bird at conventions. For those who crave culture that doesn’t tolerate any bullshit. Think of a mash-up of Jackass, Buster Keaton, and Jackie Chan. This is culture without pretension.
Liam McCall of 155 will be at the Maaspodium on Thursday, March 5th with his Double Bill: Refraction [breaking light] & FR/AGILE.
